At a hastily convened press conference, Democrat Linda Holland and Republican Kelvin Lumpkin endorsed Democrat Suzanne Atwell and Republican Richard Dorfman. Keep in mind the city's elections are nonpartisan; candidates do not run on a party platform, and they are supposed to stay aloof from party politics. And while there are breaches in the nonpartisan firewall, the spirit remains intact. This was not the city's first across-party-lines endorsement. But it was the first crisscross party lines endorsement, which will confuse partisan voters. Why would a Democrat endorse a Republican and a Democrat? Ditto with the Republican endorsement. Were the endorsees trying to create a slate of common interests?
