For about two hours on the morning of Monday, Feb. 3, the Baseball Operations Center for Ed Smith Stadium — located at 1090 Euclid Ave. in Sarasota — was the set- ting for a major methodical moving process: The Baltimore Orioles equipment arrived for the 2014 Spring Training season. Trucks from the Von Paris firm — official movers of the Orioles since 1991— completed a 1,000-mile drive from Baltimore that began Jan. 31. Although fog enveloped the grounds early, the skies cleared in a welcoming gesture for all the basics the Birds will need to make Sarasota home. The Orioles will play their first of 15 home Spring Training games on Saturday, March 1, at 1:05 p.m. against the Toronto Blue Jays. This year marks the fifth consecutive Spring Training season for the team in Sarasota and the fourth in the renovated Ed Smith Stadium, an Orioles news release points out. Staff Photographer Norman Schimmel was present to record all the activity. % Ed Smith Stadium peers out of the morning fog on Moving Day for the Baltimore Orioles.
