Thanks to the efforts of a steering committee and assistance from architect Mark Smith, Siesta Key business owners are close to com- pleting a draft revised ordinance that would allow some outdoor displays on the island. Smith explained during the Feb. 4 meeting of the Siesta Key Village Association that the proposed ordinance would entail a permit application process. "We wouldn't have a property owner or tenant say, 'I didn't know [about it].'" Smith is a past SKVA president and past chair- man of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce. The lack of knowledge that outdoor dis- plays are not allowed under the current ordinance, the Siesta Key Overlay District (SKOD), led to a number of Village mer- chants being cited b y c o u n t y C o d e E n f o r c e m e n t s t a f f in June 2013 for vio- l a t i o n s .
