LET THERE BE LIGHT
2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, and noon
Sunday, April 13
Legendary director John Huston (The
Treasure of the Sierra Madre, et al.) made
this documentary between 1944 and 1946, fol-
lowing a group of soldiers seeking treatment
for depression and trauma. We'd recognize the
symptoms now as PTSD, but the movie was so
controversial at the time it wasn't screened till
the 1980s. The Film Festival has been actively
addressing veterans' issues for the past few
years, and this historic film adds weight to
how we view wars and those who fight them.
IVORY TOWER
5:45 p.m. Thursday, April 10
Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times
kicked off the Film Festival a few years ago,
and now its director, Andrew Rossi, is back
with Ivory Tower, an angry look at the rising
cost of an American college education and
the challenges facing people in a generation
who are likely to end up worse off than their
parents. If you want to get pissed off, this is a
can't-miss.
