in coming years, she expects to see those facilities account for a higher percentage in the future. In response to questions, Ford-Coates explained that her staff undertakes a num- ber of initiatives to make sure every person or entity that rents property to visitors pays the appropriate amount of tax. Notices go out with the annual county property tax bills to alert owners, she noted, and her staff mem- bers check Internet ads about homes to rent and then follow up with phone calls, for exam- ple, to make sure all taxes are being collected. Last year, she said, her office was able to bring in about $300,000 in back tax revenue. "A lot of people don't know [they have to pay the tax]," she explained, "and the major- ity … are happy to pay once they realize that it's due." In cases involving property owners who refuse to pay, Ford-Coates pointed out, "We can seize their bank account," but she indi- cated they resort to that option when all other avenues have been exhausted. Rachel Brown Hackney The Allen playground located within Bayfront Park has been closed for public safety reasons because of corrosion discovered on the equipment, the City of Sarasota has announced. "It is unknown at this time when the playground will reopen," a news release says. "Staff is working with the playground equipment vendor to determine how the structure can be temporarily repaired," the release adds, noting that the equipment is believed to be 10 to 15 years old and no longer under warranty.
