A reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Grand Foyer of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Two Floridians remain in the hunt. One is Salvatore Ruggiero, a former division com- mander in the Tampa Police Department. He helped coordinate security during the recent Republican National Convention. The second is Mark Teunis, a division commander in the Clearwater Police Department. Two current chiefs will be at the reception, too: Gregory Anderson with the Oak Forest, Page 50 Ill., PD and Bernadatte DePino, who is chief of the Ocean City, Md., Police Department. The fifth candidate and second woman is Ton- ya Vincent, the deputy chief of the Richmond, Va., Police Department. Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway will re- tire next month. City Manager Tom Barwin has the sole responsibility for the choice of Hollaway's replacement, and Barwin hopes to make the winner known the week after the "beauty show" at the Van Wezel. GO GET THE MONOFILAMENT Sarasota Bay Watch will be conducting its annual monofilament line cleanup in Sara- sota Bay on Saturday, Sept. 29. Volunteers with powerboats, kayaks or cars, and those on foot, are all encouraged to show up at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron in Ken Thompson Park by 8:30 a.m. The collection effort will spread out from there to the islands, shorelines and bridges around Sarasota Bay. The line and lures are lethal to birds and marine mammals, while the lead sinker weights contribute to lead pollu- tion in food fish. Volunteers will return to the Sailing Squadron with their accumulated "harvest" so they can enjoy a free lunch as in-kind payment for their hard work. Registration is required. You can call 232-2363 or fill out a form online. The sailing squadron, Audubon Florida and Save Our Seabirds are all co-sponsors of the event with Sarasota Bay Watch.
