Sarasota News Leader May 3, 2013 Page 71 OPINION There is not a hell of a lot to be learned from the Boston explosion. It was a unique event — we hope — and the investigation was led in a very efficient way by law enforcement officials. There is much to be learned from the Texas event. The first is that fertilizer plants should not be located smack up against residences or commercial areas. Those that are should be moved, and others should not be allowed. And such plants should be regularly and rigorously inspected by the federal government. If they do not pass muster, they should be closed until they comply with strong safety rules. That seems pretty obvious to me, and while we are at it, we should take a close look around for other industries that have been overlooked.
