The expansion of the forecast is a result of
the National Hurricane Center's refinement of
meteorological modeling over the past three
years. It now has enough confidence in its
work to go public with the expanded outlook.
A companion effort — not quite ready yet for
"prime-time" — would expand the path and
intensity predictions for tropical storms and
hurricanes from the current five days to six or
maybe even seven in the future.
As always the National Hurricane Center reminds people these are predictions and that
tropical storm systems have demonstrated
wild and unpredictable changes of direction
and intensity.
Any survivor of 2004's Hurricane Charley in
Florida recalls how it intensified from Category
2 to 4 in hours, and how it took an unpredicted
hard right turn into Pine Island Sound instead
of staying offshore up to Tampa Bay. %
