The overall theme was taken up by
Commissioner Susan Chapman. "Why is
this now a local issue? Public health, mental
health, veterans affairs — these were not city
issues before. They used to be national and
state issues. Why should the city bear the burdens for the region's chronic homeless?"
The item was the last on the evening's agenda.
Shaw said at the beginning of his remarks, "I
open this discussion to the entire community,
especially north Sarasota. This has nothing
to do with our community's passion for the
homeless." %
