Patterson added that although some residents socialized in a courtyard, she spotted no congregation of homeless people on the perimeter of the shelter. "They didn't have a bunch of homeless peo- ple hanging around outside," Patterson pointed out. After Tuesday's meet- ing, Wayne Applebee, the county's home- lessness coordinator, told the News Leader h e b e l i e v e s t h e Sheriff's Office, which is expected to manage the Sarasota shelter, and the Police Department, which will be responsible for patrolling the perimeter, will come up with a collaborative approach. But it is too early to work out a specific plan, he added, because a site has not been chosen or an architectural design approved. Applebee noted that at Pinellas Safe Harbor, additional officers have not been needed to patrol the site and adjacent neighborhood.
