The State Street Parking Garage and a new 18-unit condominium on southern Lido Key received the Sarasota Planning Board's bless- ings on Wednesday evening, March 12. Both were approved by 4-1 votes. The garage needed several "adjustments" to avoid violations of the city's own build- ing codes. One was the result of urban p l a n n e r A n d r e a s Duany's downtown master plan, which requires tall buildings to "recess" their upper floors. That avoids the impression the building is looming over the street. However, the State Street lot is narrow, and the required 12-foot recess would reduce the number of spaces i n t h e g a r a g e b y one-third. "The site is 105 feet wide," said Darrell McLain, architect of the garage.
