About eight years ago, residents of Old Miakka gathered with representatives of the Sarasota County Neighborhood Services Department to work on a plan largely designed to preserve the rural character and nature of their community. "Old Miakka is particularly rich in local his- tory," says the document resulting from that initiative, the Old Miakka Neighborhood Plan. The community comprises about 57 square miles, or 36,590 acres, in the Myakka River Watershed, according to the document. Photos from the 2007 Old Miakka Neighborhood Plan show the 1914 schoolhouse surrounded by residents involved in an array of activities.
