Sarasota News Leader October 12, 2012 COMMUNITY DONATIONS FUND PROTECTIVE K-9 VESTS The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will be outfitting all eight K-9s with stab-proof and bulletproof vests, thanks to generous donations from the community. The Sarasota Sportsmen's Association "pre- sented a significant check" to Sheriff Tom Knight and K-9 Dep. Brian Biegel during its fall banquet last week, the Sheriff's Office has announced. Other major donors were Glueck's Auto Parts and Dr. Anne Chauvet of Critical Care Veterinary Specialists. The K-9 Unit members also are extending their thanks to the Retired Law Enforcement Asso- ciation of Southwest Florida, Amy's Pet Pan- try, Gecko's, Dr. Donald Lackey and Today's Cut Barber Shop for helping with this effort. The K-9 vests, which are manufactured by Point Blank Body Armor, are specifically Page 67 K-9 Koa smiles knowing he will be better-pro- tected on duty with the Sheriff's Office made for the individual dog's size and weight, the news release says. The vests are utilized during high-risk incidents, since K-9 deputies respond to all critical incidents and are often the first to make contact with suspects who are armed and dangerous, the release adds.
