SOMETHING UNIQUE In December 2010, the County Commission initially approved the grant, but it had expired. The college had been working on the project design, and it had not spent any of the $1.75 million, according to an April 8 memo to the commission from Jeff Maultsby, the county's director of business and eco nomic development. Over the past few years, the soundstage has become a goal for Ringling. In April 2010, the college pitched a plan to turn the 72yearold Municipal Auditorium into a soundstage for movie production. But Ringling College President Larry Thompson withdraw his proposal after an array of com munity groups said the auditorium filled an essential role in the community and protested its closing for use as a soundstage.
