The most difficult and controversial part of addressing homelessness in Sarasota remains challenging. However, more details did emerge on that point this week regarding where a come-as-you-are shelter in the com- munity might be located. Two pieces of city property remain pos- s i b i l i t i e s , 1 3 3 0 N . Osprey Ave. and 1800 N. East Ave. Now a third potential con- tender, 209 N. Lime Ave. — home to the Harvest Tabernacle Church campus — is on the market for $2.9 million. In a June 3 memo, Wayne Applebee, the coun- ty's director of homeless services, updated the Sarasota County commissioners on all three sites. City and county staff have remained focused on continued analysis of both the 1330 N. Osprey Ave. and 1800 N. East Ave. parcels, discuss- ing them at weekly meetings. In the most significant develop- ment, staff members had the opportunity to discuss them with representatives of the Florida Department o f E n v i r o n m e n t a l Protection (FDEP). City staff says insufficient space exists at its Public Works facility located at Goodrich Avenue and 12th Street (above) to accommodate large vehicles and other equipment that use the lot at the city's 1330 N. Osprey Ave. site.
