As more of Siesta's multi-family residences fill up with tourists, he said, and demand remains high for space on the island, people in neighbor- hoods "are finding out [rentals are] an easy way to make extra money." He indicated $2,000 a week is a typical fee for accommodations in residential areas. However, Lally noted, when most people learn a Special Magistrate can fine them up to $500 a day for repeat violations, they stop renting rooms or houses illegally. In response to a question, Lally explained, "We have to give them a reasonable time to correct a violation" before a fine is imposed. When SKA President Michael Shay asked whether Lally had issued any citations for out- door merchandise displays in Siesta Village, Lally replied, "Nothing has been done on the outdoor display [matter]." As I reported in this space on May 23, a pro- posed revision of the Siesta Key Overlay District (SKOD) ordinance has been submit- ted to the county. It would allow for limited outdoor displays for both retail and rental businesses through a formal permit process.
