SHOW AND TELL Salvatore Ruggiero SARASOTA POLICE CHIEF FINALISTS MEET THE PUBLIC — AND THE PUBLIC OFFICIALS By Stan Zimmerman City Editor The five finalists for the new Sarasota chief of police had a whirlwind tour of Sarasota on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6. Three men and two women are vying for the opportunity to replace outgoing Chief Mikel Hollaway. He confirmed this week he will hang up his badge on Halloween. The decision is entirely in the hands of Tom Barwin, Sarasota's new city manager. He an- nounced Monday, Oct. 8, that he will make his decision by the middle of next week. About 80 people attended a meet-and-greet with the would-be chiefs in the foyer of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Friday eve- ning. The women candidates were solo; the three males brought their wives. The candi- dates range in age from 46 to 54. It is almost impossible to conduct a serious interview in such circumstances. Many people wanted to talk to the candidates, so my ques- tions were short. For example: In America, your car can reflect a little of your personality, so I'd ask, "What kind of car do you drive?" My second question: "Do you have any expe- rience with a civilian police oversight com- mittee?"
