Bona fide civil rights icon Julian Bond is headed to Sarasota, where he will deliver the headline speech for the Sarasota County Democratic Party's 2014 Kennedy-King Dinner. The theme this Sunday? Civil Rights for All, a Challenge Unmet. Bond is uniquely positioned to speak on just that topic, having helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which in the early 1960s organized voter registra- tion drives and protests in the Deep South, often at great personal risk. He later served as president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, as a state legislator in Georgia and as the chairman of the NAACP. The Sarasota News Leader couldn't pass up the opportu- nity to pick his brain. Julian Bond (left) with Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton.
