and Schroeder Manatee to split the cost of the overpass. That connector would become one of the alternative routes for residents and commut- ers heading into Lakewood Ranch. Those other roads are a necessity, as evidenced by the January crash that closed University Parkway, Steube pointed out. PIECES OF THE PUZZLE The new interchange and expanded road- way projects would be designed to alleviate congestion, making it easier for motorists to reach the new Mall at University Town Center — scheduled to open Oct. 16 — exist- ing retail shops and businesses and homes in Lakewood Ranch. Steube said he has heard from constituents who do not want to move to Lakewood Ranch because of the traffic, and he has talked with business owners who say they might relocate from Lakewood Ranch because it is so diffi- cult to drive in the area. After the new mall opens, congestion is expected to intensify. "We need to get these plans approved and get moving as soon as possible," Steube said. "I don't think anyone will disagree with the fact that there is a need to do construction at that interchange." The next step is up to the Sarasota and Manatee county commissions.
