Local business owners, corporate sponsors and government and community leaders gath- ered on the morning of April 1 to kick off All Faith Food Bank's Campaign Against Summer Hunger, the food bank has announced. This is a first-of-its-kind countywide food and fund drive, a news release notes. All Faiths Food Bank will lead the 40-day campaign, which will culminate on May 10, the release says. The initiative has been planned to help feed the 21,000 Sarasota County students who receive free or reduced- price lunches during the school year; the number represents 50 percent of the student population, the release points out. During the summer, those children — and their siblings and families — may go without regular meals, the release adds. All Faiths Food Bank, with support from Gulf Coast Community Foundation and The Jewish Federation of Sarasota Manatee, created the community campaign to encourage Sarasota residents to "empty their shelves" and to make cash gifts so no child in the county goes hungry this summer, the release says. All Faiths Food Bank also issued a $500,000 challenge match made possible by early sup- porters of the effort.
