AVENIDA DE MAYO A source of consternation on the key for one neighborhood has been illegal parking, largely related to tourism. After weeks of confusion about new "No Parking" signs, with residents hesitating to call the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office about violations on Avenida de Mayo, Sgt. Scott Osborne sent the following email on March 25 to Michael Shay, president of the Siesta Key Association: "We are good to go with enforce- ment on [Avenida de] Mayo." Osborne is the leader of the Sheriff's Office's Community Policing Station on the key. Shay has been an advocate for the Avenida de Mayo residents in their quest to make certain vehicles parking on the right of way and in the street do not continue to clog the road to the point that passage by an emergency vehi- cle would be almost impossible. In response to a follow-up question from Shay, Osborne said deputies would keep a close eye on the street for the next couple of weeks. On March 16, residents who called the Sheriff's Office about drivers disobeying the new signs saw one officer come out and issue five tickets, they reported to Shay. Osborne also has reminded Shay to advise residents who see violations to phone the dis- patch number: 316-1201. A CLEANER KEY During the Great American Cleanup on March 22 — sponsored by Keep America Beautiful — 76 volunteers working in groups organized by the Siesta Key Association collected 19 30-gallon bags of recyclables weighing approximately 380 pounds and 87 30-gallon bags of garbage weighing approxi- mately 2,175 pounds, SKA President Michael Shay reported.
