Sarasota News Leader October 12, 2012 COUNTY DEALING WITH INCREASED RED TIDE LEVELS The latest beach water samples col- lected by the Sarasota County Health Department and analyzed by Mote Marine Laboratory for the algae red tide (Karenia brevis) show a marked increase over test results from a week ago, the Health Department announced late on the afternoon of Oct. 9. The most significant increase for Karenia bre- vis was found at southern Sarasota County beaches, with the highest levels occurring at Manasota Beach, a news release says. People with asthma or chronic respiratory im- pairments may experience heightened symp- toms associated with red tide when winds are blowing onshore, the release points out. Sarasota County staff is working with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Work Offender Program to remove fish killed by red tide and washed ashore on Manasota Beach, Nokomis Beach, Venice Beach and Brohard Beach Dog Park, the news release says. County staff members are continuing to in- spect beaches and respond to reports of dead sea life, the release says. As of Oct. 9, lifeguards were reporting no ef- fects of red tide on any county beaches north of Nokomis Beach, Health Department staff noted. Residents and visitors may check beach con- ditions before heading out to the beach. The Mote Marine Laboratory's Beach Conditions Report is updated at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Reports may be viewed online at www.mote. org/beaches. Residents and visitors also may register to receive email updates about spe- cific beaches.
