Sarasota News Leader October 12, 2012 Page 66 YOUTH-ORIENTED DOCUMENTARY FILMED IN NORTH PORT TO HAVE LOCAL PREMIERE OCT. 17 day, Oct. 17, at the North Port Performing Arts Center, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port. The Silent Majority, a film highlight- ing the positive choices that teens and college students are making to stay drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free, will debut locally at 7 p.m. Wednes- Admission is free and the showing — the first in Florida — is open to the public, a county news release says. The film was produced and directed by crit- ically acclaimed producer Leslie Glass. It is hosted by her daughter, Lindsey Glass, who was a co-author of the script. The moth- er-daughter filmmaking team are founders of Reach Out Recovery, a nonprofit organization "dedicated to reframing the national dialogue on addiction and recovery," the news release says. Leslie Glass also produced the film, The Secret World of Recovery. Community initiatives designed to help young people to choose good health over getting high are featured in the film, including North Port Drug Free Youth (D-Fy), Watch Your BAC, Teen Court and Road Recovery. The Silent Majority was first screened in Wash- ington, D.C., in April; "it already has garnered much interest in the locally initiated North Port D-Fy and Teen Court," the news release says. "The film highlights how millions of at-risk teens and their families make good choices that can be contagious," said North Port D-Fy spokeswoman Monica Becket in the news re- lease. "NP D-Fy members were filmed during one of our sign-up and 'Tag-It' events at the Morgan Family Community Center." Local officials and community members were interviewed for the film. Since the start of the NP D-Fy in May 2010, more than 1,400 North Port teens have signed a commitment to be drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free. Now, sever- al other communities, including Venice and Sarasota as well as several in DeSoto County, are forming similar D-Fy chapters, the release adds.
