The critically acclaimed Broadway sensation Memphis "has an exhilarating performance" set for the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota on Feb. 24, the Van Wezel has announced. With its having won four 2010 Tony Awards — including Best Musical and Best Original Score — four Drama Desk Awards and four Outer Critic Circle Awards, "it is safe to say that Memphis is magnificent!" a news release says. Thanks to "ingenious staging and direction paired with fresh and energized choreog- raphy," Memphis took Broadway by storm, the release adds. "The sensuous and soulful story" unfolds in the smoky halls and under- ground clubs of the segregated '50s, when a young white DJ, Huey Calhoun, "falls in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer," the release explains. "Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever," it adds. Tickets are $35 to $80.
