You could have been forgiven if you left Monday evening's Sarasota County Council of Neighborhood Associations meeting thinking the key to world peace lies in the construction of roundabouts. That's how effective the orga- nization's presenters were in making their case to neighborhood groups, asking them to support a chain of roundabouts that have been proposed for downtown Sarasota. The Feb. 10 program focused mostly on one of the city's biggest intersections: Gulfstream and U.S. 41, which connects residents and tourists to Bird, Lido and Longboat Keys and funnels travelers north and south from downtown. As anyone who's tried to leave the beach around sun- set can tell you, traffic frequently backs up onto the causeway between downtown and Bird Key, a big no-no in the world of engineers, said Rod Warner, a member of the Sarasota/Manatee Cars on this highway are not gliding effortlessly through a roundabout.
