THE VOLLEYS At one point Wednesday, Hines noted the intensity of the discussion between Barbetta and Patterson. "We have to be careful not to get into a back-and-forth debate. If there is a question, let one commissioner finish, so they don't talk over each other," he said. "We will have $1.9 million if they walk away [from the project]," Barbetta pointed out of SHD. "We will have a parking lot, and we will have a property on the tax rolls." But Patterson emphasized that the county was transferring a property for $1.5 million less than its value while it was subsidizing the cost of razing a building and building a park- ing lot two blocks away. She insisted the county should be receiv- ing $1.5 million at the closing, instead of the $958.862. Barbetta said even if the developer does not build a hotel on the site, at least some other allowed use — such as an office complex — would go on the property. "A hotel or office building, up to 10 stories," Barbetta added. "That's the most logical use there." As for the rapid exchange, Patterson said during the discussion that it was all a part of the process. "Commission [meetings] have always had debates. There is no animosity." % SHD Partners LLC says the new Kimpton Hotel in downtown Sarasota will have a number of amenities.
