On March 5, 2013, the County Commission voted unanimously to award a $997,379 bid to CB Construction Services Corp. of Fort Myers to build the new seawall. The work was scheduled to be completed before Sept. 30. About 82 percent of the cost was to be covered by a West Coast Inland Navigation District grant, according to a memo provided to the County Commission, and that grant expired on Sept. 30. That was the reason it was important to adhere to the timeline as it was set out. The seawall, which was more than 40 years old, clearly was in need of replacement, as evidenced by its physical state. With the project still on hold, Preisser said this week, county staff is monitoring Bay Island regularly to make certain the construction materials remaining on the site are secured.
