However, it is about 8 to 9 miles out, whereas the source for the first project was only about 7 miles offshore. Wreford acknowledged, "There will come a time when it is going to become extremely challenging to find offshore sand sources. … There's no question about it." The number and types of renourishment proj- ects "have been ever increasing," Wreford continued. For any renourishment project, sand of suit- able grain size and color is a necessity, he noted. This project will require a range of 700,000 to 900,000 cubic yards, he said. Nonetheless, the source located for the upcoming renourishment probably also will have sufficient sand of adequate quality for use in one more project at Turtle Beach. The central portion of the first nourishment "performed very well," he pointed out, both on the beach and in the system near the shore. That means Mother Nature continues to push sand up on that part of the beach, he said. A July 9, 2013 memo to the County Commission reported that the South Siesta Key Beach Restoration Project from Dec. 20, 2006 to April 30, 2007 "consisted of the placement of about 922,300 cubic yards of dredged sand along approximately 2 miles of open shore- line fronting the Gulf of Mexico, from just north of the former Midnight Pass, to about 300 feet south of Point of Rocks." Regarding the cost of the next Turtle Beach project, Patterson explained during the Condominium Council meeting that while abutting property owners will be assessed part of the expense, the amount should be about the same as it was for that first under- taking.
