When officers contacted the family at 1723 Sixth St. in Englewood, the report says, they learned that Damien left the house wearing a red sweatshirt shortly before family members noticed law enforcement representatives in the area. Damien then returned to the house, the family said, changed clothes and took off again, the report notes. Damien's brother told officers that Damien "plays with knives frequently and has several knives hidden around the area," the report adds. When a sergeant showed the brother a photo of the knife used in the attack, the report continues, the brother said the fam- ily had knives similar to that in the kitchen drawers. Deputies searched for Damien throughout the night, the report says. They took him into custody at 10:25 a.m. Feb 12, after Damien's mother notified the Sheriff's Office she had received a call from him; officers were able to trace the call to Lemon Bay Plaza. Deputies said Reel was "dirty, disheveled and … cov- ered in insect bites and scratches" when they apprehended him, leading the officer who wrote the report to believe Damien had spent the night in the woods, the report notes. Baskind positively identified Reel, the report says. "The unsolicited attack was an obvious attempt to cause the victim's death as the injuries were … inflicted upon [the victim's] exposed neck," the report adds.
